Olean was founded at the headwaters of the Allegheny River in 1804 by Revolutionary War hero Maj. Adam Hoops. The settlement flourished as a supply depot and departure point for pioneers heading west on makeshift rafts and flatboats. With the completion of the Buffalo and Washington Railroad in the 1870s and a subsequent oil boom, Olean emerged as a major petroleum shipping center at the turn of the 20th century.
