Mille Lacs Lake, 4 miles north on US 169, offers more than 150 miles of shoreline for summer and winter recreation. Meaning “thousand lakes” in French, the lake is Minnesota's second largest. From December to March more than 5,000 fishing shacks dot the surface of the frozen lake, creating a transitory community known as Frostbite Flats.
