Ridgeland traces its origins to the railroad, which came through present-day Jasper County in the mid-1800s. The town, then known as Gopher Hill, had just begun to prosper when Union soldiers torched much of the region during the Civil War. By the early 1900s its location on US 17, the main route between New York City and Miami, put the town back on the map, but it was the arrival of I-95 that established it as a major travel service center.
