Sharon is a residential community in an area once known as Massapoag, a Native American word meaning “great waters.” Largemouth bass and pickerel inhabit Lake Massapoag, a popular fishing spot. Rockridge Cemetery contains the grave of and a memorial to Deborah Sampson Gannett, a woman who disguised herself as a man and fought in the Revolutionary War. When her gender was discovered by a physician in 1783, she was given an honorable discharge and a pension for her military service. A statue of Gannett stands in front of the Sharon Public Library on Main Street. A street also was named in honor of the town heroine. Learn More...
