Shawnee was settled in a matter of minutes after the American Indian Territory of which it was a part was opened to pioneer settlement. Emerging as a bustling railroad town, Shawnee made a bid to become the capital of Oklahoma in 1910 but lost the honor to Oklahoma City. The town's fortunes turned, however, with the discovery of oil in 1926.
