This old railroad town in the Tehachapi Mountains is in an area known as the Tehachapi-Mojave Wind Resource Area, site of more than 4,500 wind turbines. These turbines collectively generate 2.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to meet the annual needs of almost 300,000 homes. The best time to see the turbines spinning is late afternoon when hot winds blow from the nearby Mojave Desert. For guided tours contact the Kern Wind Energy Association at (661) 831-1038; reservations are required at least 3 weeks in advance. Brochures outlining a self-guiding tour are available from the chamber of commerce. Learn More...
