Youngstown was named after John Young, a surveyor who purchased 15,600 acres of land in 1797. The town's development was slow until 1803, when iron ore was discovered and the first blast furnace was established in the area. The opening of the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal increased both the population and industrialization of the area during the 1820s. In 1862 the first coal mine was opened, and the first steel plant, the Union Iron and Steel Co., was built in 1892. Most early settlers came from Pennsylvania, New York and New England; however, the growing industrial economy soon attracted European emigrants. Learn More...
