The “Birthplace of the Confederacy” also was its deathbed; both the first organized secession meeting in 1860 and the last cabinet meeting of Confederate president Jefferson Davis in 1865 took place in Abbeville in what is known as Burt-Stark Mansion. John C. Calhoun, statesman and vice president of the United States 1825-32, was born in Abbeville, where he later practiced law.
The historic 1908 Abbeville Opera House on Town Square once presented well-known performers such as Fanny Brice, Jimmy Durante and Groucho Marx on its stage; today the restored theater offers a broad range of contemporary works. Phone (864) 366-2157.
