DescriptionEstablished in 1825, Adrian once was a bustling community of industry with three automobile manufacturing companies. Today the seat of Lenawee County is home to Adrian College and Siena Heights University. Located on the Raisin River, Adrian has an impressive historic district centered on Dennis and State streets. The 79 houses in the district exemplify the evolution of architectural styles in the area, from the Greek and Gothic revivals of the 1830s to Italianate to the Queen Anne-style houses that became popular after the Civil War. The houses are all privately owned.
The Croswell Opera House, 129 E. Maumee St., is an example of the utilitarian architecture prevalent after the Civil War. It has been offering musicals, plays, lectures and operas since 1866; phone (517) 264-7469.
