DescriptionAltus is the center of a thriving agricultural region, the result of the 70,000-acre Lugert-Altus irrigation district. Farms produce alfalfa seed, cattle, cotton and wheat. Altus Air Force Base is another major employer. Run by the 97th Air Mobility Wing, the base serves as the Air Force's primary training facility for pilots and flight engineers who handle jumbo jet transports.
For an area that depends on irrigation to prosper, it is ironic that the city's beginnings were marked by a disastrous flood in 1891. Having fled to higher ground, settlers banded together and formed a community to help endure any further hardships the plains might bestow upon them. Altus was the town's chosen name because, according to one of the settlers, it meant “high ground.”
