Amsterdam, settled in 1783, became an important industrial center with the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. After the Utica & Schenectady Railroad came through 11 years later, the town entered its commercial heyday with more than 100 industrial plants manufacturing such goods as carpets, brooms, buttons, clothing and linseed oil.
