DescriptionJones County was one of 14 counties carved out of the Black Hawk Purchase, the territory ceded to the U.S. government by the Sac and Fox Indians in 1832. Lexington, the county seat, was incorporated in 1877. The town was later renamed for the daughter of a Winnebago chief. Anamosa means “white fawn.”
The Iowa Legislature proclaimed Anamosa the state's pumpkin capital in 1993. Entries to the town's annual weigh-off held the first Saturday in October regularly tip the scales at 1,000 pounds.
