Description
Tucked into the Moreno Valley and surrounded by the imposing Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Angel Fire gained its name from two different natural phenomena—bright afternoon sunlight reflecting off alpine peaks, and (according to 19th-century mountain man and Indian fighter Kit Carson) early morning winter sunlight glinting on ice-covered tree branches. At different points in time this ruggedly scenic region has been home to Moache Ute Indians, miners, ranchers, trappers, pioneers and cowboys.
Angel Fire was a filming location for the 1989 TV mini-series “Lonesome Dove,” and you can still visit the cabin built for this critically acclaimed and immensely popular Western starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, in which New Mexico stood in for Montana.
A year-round outdoor activity mecca, Angel Fire offers summer boating, fishing, hunting, golfing, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Torchlight parades, races and a web of runs (from beginner to advanced) keep boarders, skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts busy during the winter months.
Duffers looking to improve their game will find that golf balls travel up to 10 percent farther due to the high altitude. Angel Fire Resort Golf Course, N. Angel Fire Road and Miller Lane, is one of the area's premier public courses; phone (800) 633-7463.
Culturally, the Music from Angel Fire festival brings chamber music to the mountain community from late August to early September.
