Founded in 1839 and built along the bluffs of the Ouachita Valley, Arkadelphia was a river port during the steamboat days. The town is an agricultural and light industrial center producing aluminum, boats, clothing and wood products. It also has two colleges: Henderson State University has some 3,700 students; Ouachita Baptist College's enrollment is nearly 1,600.
