DescriptionArkansas (ar-KAN-sas) City's position, 4 miles north of the present Oklahoma border, made it a logical mustering point for one of the largest land rushes in the history of westward expansion. By the tens of thousands they lined up—eager boomers and homesteaders afoot, on horseback and with every horse-drawn conveyance possible—awaiting the gunshot that would signal the opening of the Cherokee Strip in 1893.
As the West lost its wildness, Arkansas City became what its Arkansas River site promised—a marketing and transportation center. The discovery of oil in the vicinity in the early 20th century added the refineries and other petroleum-related industries that dominated the economy through the middle part of the century.
