Aurora is in a region where West Virginia's state tree, the sugar maple, is plentiful. Native Americans once collected the sap, which runs in early spring, in wooden troughs and heated it with hot stones. The sap, now gathered using metal buckets or networks of plastic tubing that lead to large tanks, is then processed in modern evaporating plants.
Cathedral State Park, 1 mile east on SR 50 to 12 Cathedral Park Dr., comprises 133 acres of virgin forest, mostly hemlock, and offers 6 miles of walking trails, a nature area and picnic facilities; for further information phone (304) 735-3771.
