DescriptionBarbourville, on the Wilderness Road in the scenic Cumberland Valley, was one of the first settlements in southeastern Kentucky. The site was originally owned by James Barbour who donated the land in 1800 with the stipulation that half the proceeds from the sale of lots be used to erect public buildings.
The first Civil War encounter in Kentucky, a Confederate victory, took place in Barbourville Sept. 19, 1861.
