DescriptionBarnegat Light, the northernmost community on Long Beach Island, was settled by Scandinavian fishermen; whalers first came to the isle in the early 18th century. Fishing, particularly for tuna, and summertime diversions sustain the town.
Because the area around Loveladies Harbor has a scenic appeal likened to that of Cape Cod, the town, named for an 18th-century landowner, has become a well-known art colony. Long Beach Island is an 18-mile-long segment of the barrier isles that outline the New Jersey coast. Its width ranges from about 3 blocks to 1 mile. A long causeway carries SR 72 across Barnegat Bay to Ship Bottom.
