The Town of Barton was first granted by the legislature in response to a petition from some 60 Revolutionary War veterans in 1781, under the name “Providence” after their hometown in Rhode Island. However, it was not chartered until Oct. 20, 1789, at which time Colonel (later General) William Barton, a war hero, changed the name to Barton. Crystal Lake State Park is popular with water enthusiasts.
