The Wolf Creek Railroad came to Bastian in 1914 to serve a growing logging industry, and the Virginia Hardwood Lumber Mill opened here in 1927. Thanks to the mill, Bastian was the first town in Bland County to receive electricity. During the Great Depression, thousands of young men worked at a model camp established in Bastian by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The mill and railroad closed after World War II.
