DescriptionFounded in 1833 by Christopher Columbus Payne, Batavia was incorporated as a village in 1856, then as a city in 1891. The nickname “Windmill City” was applied to Batavia after the Civil War, when three windmill manufacturers in Batavia shipped their whirling product worldwide.
Fox River, which flows through downtown, was the centerpiece of town and today it is the site for abundant recreational activities. The Batavia Riverwalk includes an activity center, park benches, an entry court, a boardwalk and other amenities. Outdoor festivals and concerts are offered in the summer.
