DescriptionBattle Mountain is named for a nearby mountain range that commemorates a Native American raid against pioneers in 1857. The discovery of minerals in Copper Canyon in 1870 brought permanent settlers, and Battle Mountain became the point of transfer for mining supplies between stage lines and railroads.
Mining is the community's main industry. There are two barite mines near Battle Mountain and a gold and silver mine at Copper Canyon. Battle Mountain straddles I-80, which follows the old Bidwell, Donner and Fremont pioneer trails. To the south along SR 305 is the scenic Reese River Valley, part of the Arc Dome Wilderness in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
