DescriptionBay City is a major distribution point for the industrial and agricultural wealth of east-central Michigan. Many domestic and foreign freighters pass through the city's busy port, and boat races are often held on the river. Shipping and commerce have been the foundation of Bay City's prosperity since the demise of its lumber industry around 1900. Mansions built by the lumber barons can be seen along the tree-shaded residential streets in the city's three historic districts.
The Saginaw River and Saginaw Bay provide ample recreational opportunities. Bay City State Recreation Area is 5 miles north on SR 247 on the Lake Huron shore.
