DescriptionAlthough the Maubilla Indians were the first people to settle in the area, Bayou La Batre was officially founded by Joseph Bosarge in 1786 as part of a Spanish land grant. The city's main street is the bayou where trawlers are often three or four abreast on both sides of the tributary as it enters the Mississippi Sound. Bayou La Batre's boatbuilding, seafood and petroleum industries are among the largest on the Gulf Coast.
