Established in 1857, Beatrice (be-AT-tris) was named for the daughter of one of the town's founders. Nearby is Homestead National Monument of America, which commemorates the Homestead Act of 1862. The Gage County Courthouse, built 1890-92, is mentioned in Laura Ingalls Wilder's “Little House” books. Its murals chronicle regional history.
The Beatrice Public Library, 100 N. 16th St., houses the 3,000-volume Nebraska State Genealogical Society Collection, D.A.R. Lineage Books and materials from the Southeast Nebraska Genealogical Society. The Heritage Room includes collections of rare books and maps and local history materials. The library also is part of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, featuring rare trees and a wildflower and prairie grass garden.
