DescriptionBeckley is the center of southern West Virginia's smokeless coal region. The bituminous coal mined in this area is a higher grade of coal that produces less smoke when burned.
Beckley is the northern anchor of the 187-mile Coal Heritage Trail which winds its way past company stores, miners' houses, railroad yards, coal tipples and 500 small company towns on its way south to Bluefield; follow SR 16 southwest to US 52, which heads south and east to Bluefield, the end of the trail. Mile markers along the way indicate points of interest; phone (304) 465-3720 or (855) 982-2625. Another scenic drive runs south along US 19 in Bluestone Canyon.
