Founded as the town of Liberty in 1782, Bedford soon was renamed after the Fourth Duke of Bedford. The town is home to many historic structures, including Avenel, a former 1838 plantation manor house that once welcomed such visitors as Gen. Robert E. Lee and writer Edgar Allan Poe. Held April through October, the Bedford Farmers' Market, downtown on Washington Street, offers fresh fruits and vegetables and homemade wares on Friday mornings and on the first Saturday of the month.
