Formerly a prosperous shipbuilding center, Belfast is a community resplendent with restored Federal and early Victorian homes built by former sea merchants. The city, located on Penobscot Bay, is becoming a cultural center with artists, writers and craftspeople adding to the economic revival of Waldo County.
The 1-mile Belfast Harbor Walk runs along the downtown waterfront from Footbridge Road to Commercial Street and offers views of the Passagassawakeag River.
Local theater groups, including Cold Comfort Theater, (207) 930-7244, and Midcoast Actors’ Studio, (207) 370-7592, offer productions year-round. Local cruise and aviation companies offer summer tours by appointment.
