DescriptionOn the Southern Pacific Railroad route, Benson grew as a distribution center for copper and silver mined in the San Pedro Valley. When railroad transportation began to decline in the 1920s, the town welcomed a new breed of traveler, fledgling motorists out to discover the Southwest. Benson's mining, ranching and railroad history is recalled at the Benson Historical Museum; phone (520) 586-3134.
For a breed of a different kind, visit The Oasis Sanctuary at 5411 N. Teran Rd. Open by appointment only, the facility is an exotic bird sanctuary that permanently houses rescued psittacines (parrot-type) birds; phone (520) 212-4737.
