Surrounded by wheat fields near the base of the Horse Heaven Hills, Bickleton bills itself as the “Bluebird Capital of the World.” The mountain bluebird and the western bluebird both nest in the area, and since the 1960s more than 2,000 blue and white nest boxes have been built, mostly on fence posts along county roads. These migratory species are residents from February through October, but the best viewing time is during the April-July nesting season. A large bluebird house beside the town post office honors a local couple who put up the first nest boxes.
