Description
One of California's largest year-round recreation areas, Big Bear Lake and Valley are about 30 miles northeast of San Bernardino in the eastern San Bernardino Mountains. Camping, picnicking, mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding are popular in summer; skiing, snowboarding and sledding are popular winter pastimes. Fishing is permitted in season. Swimming is permitted only in designated areas, including Meadow Park. Boat rentals and scenic boat tours are available.

Self-guiding tours
The Gold Fever Trail Guide, a 2- to 3-hour auto tour, covers 15 sites of the 1860-63 gold rush that occurred in Holcomb Valley just north of the lake. The free guide is available at Big Bear Discovery Center, 2.7 miles east of Fawnskin on SR 38; phone (909) 382-2790 or (909) 866-3437.
