DescriptionThe crescent-shaped bay known to the region's Native Americans as Tsan-wuch was named Ensenada de Garzón by members of a Spanish expedition in 1792. Capt. George Vancouver's visit later that same year gave the bay its present name, a nod to the abundant stands of western paper birch.
A waterfront resort community near the British Columbia border, Birch Bay is particularly popular with summer vacationers. Birch Bay State Park is a mile south at 5105 Helweg Rd. in Baine; phone (360) 371-2800.
