Black Diamond is named for the Black Diamond Coal Co. of California, which by 1895 was the primary developer of a major vein found in the region 5 years earlier. Among the area's natural assets is the Green River Gorge State Park Conservation Area, which includes Nolte, Flaming Geyser and Kanaskat-Palmer state parks. Three miles south of town SR 169 spans the gorge 200 feet above the river.
