Boonville was named for Garret Boon, an agent of the Holland Land Co., which owned property in the region at the end of the 18th century. The Black River Canal and the Black River Railroad brought prosperity to the town in the mid-1800s. Many of the grand houses of that period are on Schuyler Street. Hulbert House, a Georgian coach inn, was built in 1812.
