DescriptionEstablished in 1644, the coastal village of Branford became a popular Long Island Sound vacation spot at the turn of the 20th century. Short Beach, Branford Point, Indian Neck, Pine Orchard and Stony Creek—granite coves known as the “five fingers” of Branford—lured many summer vacationers. The hundreds of rocky islands just offshore are known collectively as the Thimble Islands; only a few dozen are inhabited.
Harrison House and Museum, 124 Main St., dates from 1724. The house contains period furnishings and items of local and historical interest; on the grounds are an herb garden and a barn. Guided tours are offered Saturday 2 to 5 from June through September, or by appointment; phone (203) 488-4828.
