The town of Breaks is named for one of the longest and deepest gorges east of the Mississippi River, a 5-mile-rift carved by the Big Sandy River through Pine Mountain. Daniel Boone is said to have discovered The Breaks in 1767 while forging trails into Kentucky. Few visitors saw the remote “Grand Canyon of the South” until after World War II, when coal roads were built into the mountains.
