Brownsville is part of the Laurel Highlands. Dunlap Creek Bridge, built in 1839, was the first cast-iron bridge built in America; it crosses Dunlap Creek, carrying US 40 through downtown Brownsville and connecting High and Market streets. A metal truss bridge known as the Intercounty Bridge was built in 1917; it separates Fayette County from Washington County.
