DescriptionAgriculture played an important role in the historical development of Camarillo (cam-a-REE-oh). A mild climate made it possible for farmers to plant up to three crops per year, and orange, lemon and walnut groves flourished in the sunny hills and coastal plain.
Camarillo State Mental Hospital opened here in 1936; patients included jazz legend Charlie “Bird” Parker. The historic hospital campus with its Spanish Colonial Revival-style buildings, tiled courtyards and fountains now is home to California State University Channel Islands. The Studio Channel Islands Art Center , 2222 Ventura Blvd., features works by 40 resident artists; phone (805) 383-1368.
