DescriptionUnlike other towns developed along the National Road, Cambridge City had the added advantage of straddling the Whitewater Canal. The canal failed to live up to its promise, but the National Road brought a steady stream of westbound wagons through Cambridge City, founded virtually overnight in 1836.
National Road Heritage Site at Huddleston Farmhouse, 838 National Rd., has exhibits describing the history and significance of the National Road and hosts a farmers market in summer months. The three-story Federal-style farmhouse, constructed by a farming family 1839-41, accommodated many travelers along the road; phone (765) 478-3172.
