DescriptionIn an area settled by Dutch and Germans in the early 1700s, Canajoharie gets its name from a Mohawk Indian expression meaning “the pot that washes itself.” The pot is a large whirlpool in the gorge of Canajoharie Creek. A 45-foot waterfall can be seen at the gorge from Wintergreen Park.
The first paper bag was invented in Canajoharie by James Arkell in 1859. In 1891 his son started a packing company that later became Beech-Nut Nutrition, a baby food manufacturer since 1931.
