The discovery of gold in nearby Canyon Creek prompted the overnight settlement of a mining camp in 1862. During the height of the gold rush, supplies and mail were brought into camp three times a week from The Dalles by Pony Express, later replaced by freight service over the old Dalles Military Road. Passions ignited by the gold rush were further heightened by clashes between the pro-Union Oregon miners and the Confederate Californians.
