Named after Jean Baptiste Girardot, who established a trading post here in 1733, Cape Girardeau, on the banks of the Mississippi River, was settled by Spanish immigrants drawn to the area by Spain's offer of inexpensive, tax-exempt land. Flourishing river trade characterized the town before the Civil War. Cape Girardeau experienced an industrial resurgence in the 1880s with the establishment of new railroad lines.
A look at area heritage and culture is available at the Cape River Heritage Museum, 538 Independence St.; phone (573) 334-0405. The city contains many scenic parks. Court House Park overlooks the Mississippi, while Capaha Park boasts a notable rose garden. A scenic portion of I-55 runs 57 miles north from Cape Girardeau to St. Mary.
