DescriptionCaribou is a business center for Aroostook County, source of 90 percent of the state's potato crop and one of the largest potato-shipping areas in the world. The Aroostook and Little Madawaska rivers, which offer excellent trout and salmon fishing, flow through town. The city offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including canoeing, fishing, camping, autumn foliage drives and winter sports.
Northwest of Caribou along SR 161, communities with such names as Sweden, New Sweden, Jemtland and Stockholm reveal the origins of those who settled the region in the 1870s.
