The pinnacles and spires of the San Rafael Swell south of Castle Dale were the site of Robbers Roost, the hideout from which Butch Cassidy and other outlaws launched their holdups and rustling activities. An early settler was Orange Seely, a cattleman who provided medical attention to other settlers and also was known for his prodigious girth, as he was said to weigh more than 300 pounds.
