Basing its economy on light industries, agriculture, limestone and oil and gas deposits, Chanute is an old railroad town bearing the surname of Octave Chanute, a civil engineer for the LL&G Railway during the early 1870s. His avocation was building and flying heavier-than-air machines. The inventor's designs were used by Orville and Wilbur Wright at Kitty Hawk, N.C.
Nearby recreation sites include Santa Fe Park, on Santa Fe Avenue; Wilson State Fishing Lake, 12 miles west via SR 39 and US 75 near Buffalo; Fall River State Park, 23 miles west via SR 39; and Pearson-Skubitz Big Hill Lake, 25 miles south via US 169.
