DescriptionBasing its economy on light industries, agriculture, limestone and oil and gas deposits, Chanute is an old railroad town bearing the surname of Octave Chanute, a civil engineer for the LL&G Railway during the early 1870s. His avocation was building and flying heavier-than-air machines. The inventor's designs were used by Orville and Wilbur Wright at Kitty Hawk, N.C.
