DescriptionCharles Town was named for George Washington's brother, who laid out the town in 1786. Streets bear the names of Washington's family members. After his raid on Harpers Ferry, John Brown was tried and hanged for treason in Charles Town.

Charles Town marks the West Virginia terminus of the scenic portion of SR 9, which runs eastward into Virginia. From Charles Town it is 6 miles to the Virginia border.
