DescriptionChatham figured prominently in many of Ontario's major historical events. Chief Tecumseh, with General Proctor and his Imperial Army, made a stand in the city in their retreat from Detroit. Sunken British gunboats have been discovered in the area—the remains of a skirmish of the War of 1812. Chatham also was a terminus of the Underground Railroad, which allowed about 5,000 fugitive slaves to escape to Canada 1850-61.
Events include the Tartan Sertoma Supreme Highland Games held the second weekend of July, which features competition between pipers, drummers, dancers and athletes. Recreation activities include bird-watching, water sports, fishing, hiking and hunting.
