Chinook was named after the Native American word for the winds that often whip through this area during January and February, causing the temperature to rise as much as 70 degrees in a few hours. Melting the snow and exposing the grass, chinooks have saved many cattle herds from disaster. Charles M. Russell captured the significance of these winds to the range cattleman in his picture of a starving cow titled “Waiting for a Chinook.”
