Armstrong City was established in 1887 as a stop on the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad. The Panhandle settlement soon was renamed for Claude Ayers, the engineer who brought the first passenger train into town. Dr. W.A. Warner arrived in Claude in 1897 and is credited with founding one of the first Boy Scout troops west of the Mississippi.
