DescriptionA resort and recreation center at the summit of the Sacramento Mountains, Cloudcroft offers skiing and other fun in the snow in winter and summer camping and hiking in the Lincoln National Forest.
This high, wide country was settled when the Southern Pacific Railroad ran a spur from Alamogordo to tap the timber reserves in the Sacramento Mountains. To lure excursion passengers the railroad built an elaborate resort, The Lodge, in 1901. Although the last freight train arrived in 1947, the resort still operates. Today's visitors enjoy hiking, bicycling and skiing along trails where trains once traveled. Local artisans create a variety of crafts. Shopping, dining and entertainment venues are along downtown's historic Burro Avenue.
